NEUE DEUTSCHE BIOGRAPHIE NDB

Cumulated Index to the Neue Deutsche Biographie (NDB) and the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie (ADB)

The NDB (25 volumes, since 1953) and its predecessor ADB (56 volumes, 1875-1912, reprint 1967-1971) are one of the most important biographical dictionaries in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. They are used nationally and internationally by all historical sciences. A broad range of ca. 150,000 personal names is registered together with further biographical information and names of authors in the NDB and in the ADB. The project under patronage of Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Bavarian State Library) and Historische Kommission (Historical Commission) bei der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Munich) created a complete electronic index. This allows not only more comfortable and faster access to the persons registered, but also improving the options for indexing and searching in the electronic medium. In the course of editing the names, information like standardized and hierarchical job titles etc. is added. This makes it possible to undertake more intensive and complex research concerning social history, e.g. in the area of research into elites, the nobility and bourgeoisie (professions in certain periods, career structures, network of social relationships, marriage circles). The database is available via the internet by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and also as CD-ROM by Duncker & Humblot.
